LEMF SISTERS

Redefine the vernacular of farming

LEMF Farming Enterprise symbolizes how women farmers are changing the face of farming industry albeit financial, patriarchal, and land scarcity challenges.  LEMF Farming Enterprise is situated in a remote small town of Welverdiend, west of the mining town of Carletonville, in the West Rand District

Municipality in Gauteng province.

Although known to be a farming town, Welverdiend is known for unfavorable weather conditions, water scarcity and lack of employment opportunities. All these are adequate pretext for not trying to pursue one’s dream. Yet, real, and perceived odds did not discourage Emily Badenhorst and Lindiwe Mwelase, founders of LEMF Farming Enterprise, to pursue their farming dreams. These super-sheroes, became the reason the Welverdiend community will never face food scarcity.

Emily and Lindiwe use their two (2) hector leased land to keep their livestock which include mixed breed, Nguni and Bonsmara cows, chickens, and to plant vegetable such as beetroot, spinach, and green peppers. Their vegetables are sold to the community at a sensible price, making them affordable to vulnerable community members. It is normal to get a bunch of spinach that can easily serve as relish for a family of five (5) for R10 from LEMF Farming Enterprise. Emily and Lindiwe also plant vegetables in backyards of their family homes to complement the ones grown in their already compacted two hectors plot.
